What is Mission Zero?
Mission Zero
Mission Zero is to deliver a human society (both living and working) that has zero negative impact on our Earth and its systems. It includes reversing negative impacts and restoring our Earth and her systems wherever and whenever we can.
Mission Zero has a dual relationship to our organization’s name, Net Impact. Mission Zero is the journey to zero net impact. Our collective net impact is the action we take to rapidly accelerate the journey to sustainability, Mission Zero.
The mission of sustainability is progressing to zero net impact for all human living, government, and business. It is a journey. It can be done. Leaders all over the world are proving it. Interface Inc., led by Chairman Ray Anderson, calls their journey up Mount Sustainability ‘Mission Zero’. They are one of the world leaders and don’t think they are even half way there. How far along are you?
Net Impact Orlando Mission Zero Tips
Net Impact Orlando’s Mission Zero Tips support the chapter’s Impact at Work Program.
The Net Impact Orlando team selected these Mission Zeroes to give you immediate steps you can take to make your work life and work space more sustainable. Before taking on a sustainability initiative on your job or in your company, it makes sense to become more sustainable yourself and set an example.
Mission Zero Tips
People complain there is not enough information available on what to do. We think there is so much information available that it is hard to zero in on the most impactful things you can do.
Net Impact Mission Zero Tips is a growing and vetted list of the most impactful things you can do (think MY IMPACT) in the everyday categories of our work lives. Net Impact Orlando Mission Zero Tips are not new or original, but rather a validated set of tips that are short, straightforward and organized for you to use as a checklist in the following categories:
-
Reduce Energy (lighting, electronics, heating-A/C, appliances, equipment, etc.)
-
Reduce Water Use
-
Reduce Material Use (paper, cardboard, plastic, etc.)
-
Vehicle Travel (commuting, business travel)
-
Reduce Waste
-
Increase Recycling
-
Green Meetings
-
Green Travel
-
Personal Workspace

Hope You Get ‘Bitten By The Bug’
There are many green tip lists out there and the majority of them are very good (Check www.epa.gov, many state and local government sites and the many reputable green non-profits, e.g., http://sierraclub.typepad.com/greenlife and for profits, e.g., http://planetgreen.discovery.com/go-green/green-work to learn and for other green tip lists.
The Net Impact Orlando Mission Zero Tips are to help you zero in on the quickest and most impactful steps you can to take to lead a more sustainable work life. We hope that you will be ‘bitten by the bug’ (‘spear in the heart’ moment) of sustainability action to learn and do more.
‘What If Everybody Did That?’
Net Impact Orlando’s thinking for the Mission Zero Tips Project is ‘What If Everybody Did That?’, i.e., took the first steps (tips) to a sustainable work life and work space. Implementing many of the Mission Zero tips in your work life and work space will set an example for one, five, ten others and more. You and all those others will start to think differently. You’ll question why you are running the water while soaping up your hands, you’ll question why you have lights on in a conference room when there is plenty of daylight, why you automatically turn on the lights when you enter a room, why you are idling your car on line at a drive-up or why you are using a drive-up at all, etc.
