Net Impact Orlando Official 2009 Launch

Net Impact Orlando President’s Presentation of “Sustainability Through Project Management and Net Impact” by Debbie Deland at PMI Global Congress 2009 in October, Gaylord Palms Convention Center.
Net Impact Orlando, a professional chapter of Net Impact, launched its chapter at the Project Management Institute (PMI) Global Congress 2009 at the Gaylord Palms Convention Center October 12, 2009 in the session called “Sustainability Through Project Management and Net Impact”.  The presentation and supporting white paper were well received by session attendees and PMI leadership.  PMI is just starting its sustainability journey and the new project management concepts presented at the Congress will help spur their progress.  PMI is planning to make the paper one of their PubQuizzes for certification holders to maintain their certifications through PMI continuing education credits (PDUs).
The White Paper and Presentation
PMI Global Congress presentation selection requires review and approval of detailed concept by a board of expert project managers, as well as final acceptance of the speaker’s white paper and slides.  The “Sustainability Through Project Management and Net Impact” white paper and presentation covers a lot of ground and provides tools for project managers to immediately apply sustainability on every project with every client whether external or internal.  It proposes a new dream for America, i.e., Lead the world in sustainable business and living progress within ten years.   To update the mental models of world reality for project managers, the paper and presentation depict our new era of declining resource availability and increasing human demand.   Without being depressing (sobering, yes), the paper and presentation state that the debate is over; we must move to sustainability rapidly.  The paper and presentation makes the case that Project Managers worldwide have the power to rapidly accelerate sustainability action due to being involved in so many projects from the beginning, having the leadership and professional skills to ask the hard questions, and the flexibility of the Project Management discipline to integrate sustainability principles.  A basic outline of the paper and presentation is:

  • A new, great dream for America and the world
  • The new 21st century, resource constrained era and the power of Project Managers to contribute
  • Sustainability definitions and key measures/goals
  • Why America must lead
  • Vivid picture of un-sustainability of what America produces and consumes
  • Sustainability macro trend and business case, including quick overview business cases
  • The benefits for project managers for developing a knowledge base in sustainability and leading sustainability on every project with every client that introduces a new initiative for project managers, i.e., The Project Managers Sustainability Accord (PMSA).
  • As a tool for Project Managers, a brief introduction to the world’s leading sustainability framework, key to applying sustainability for any project including a translation of the framework for project strategy and decision-making related to sustainability.
  • As a preliminary tool, a view of sustainability integration into Project Management Process Groups that introduces two new concepts, the Sustainable Project Manager (SPM) and “Project Management Sustainability Integration” (PMSI).
  • As a local, national, international tool for project managers, the white paper and presentation introduces Net Impact as a resource for sustainability learning, coaching by experts from all over the world and locally on working sustainability on any project manager’s project.  Net Impact Orlando launch to inspire and enable Central Floridians to take on sustainability on their jobs in their workplaces (www.netimpactorlando.org).  If you don’t live in Central Florida, please go to www.netimpact.org to find a Chapter near you both in North American and all over the world.
  • Conclusion that is a call to action for project managers to work sustainability on every project with every client whether internal or external.
